Did you think Valentine’s Day was just about chocolates, cheesy love notes, flowers, cinnamon hearts and candy kisses? Well, for those of you here in the good ol’ USA, that may be what most of the fuss is about, however, if you venture around the globe, you’ll find there’s much more to it than that! Join myself, Chelsea DobbieRed Stag’s Special Reporter and World Traveler, all the way from the Land Down Under, otherwise, known as Australia, as we take a look at the Valentine’s Day traditions from around the world. Some of them may surprise you, others may shock you, but one thing’s for sure, by the time you get to the end of this post, you’ll be deadset on scoring some moolah  with our Valentine’s bonuses! Sit back, relax and get ready for some interesting (and lovable) facts!

Traditions from Germany, to Thailand, and Inbetween

ChelseaChances are, you haven’t spent very many Valentine’s Day moments outside of your own country, however, it’s more than interesting to find out how the rest of the world celebrates the day of love, and also, when they celebrate it! As I am quite the world traveler (if I do say so myself!), so I have had the pleasure of seeing many different traditions and practices; some at “the norm” of the Western world, others, not so much. Nonetheless, let’s take a look at some of the most interesting Valentine’s Day traditions!

If we travel not so far, a quick jump over the Atlantic and into Europe, we’ll find ourselves in Germany, where they have quite the interesting “Valentine’s staple” - a hairy pig! Yes, that’s right. Did I mention this pig is also a fatter version of one you may picture? Let that process in your mind for just a second. While I’m sure that gave you more of a mental picture than you were asking for, Valentine’s Day in Germany, or, Valentinstag in German, is very much like what we have here in North America. Chocolates and cards are given, but only amongst adults; you won’t see this activity going on in schools, such as here in the USA. Where does the pig come from? Not only are pigs the symbol of “love” and “lust” in Germany, but there are also a symbol of luck! This hits home for any casino lover, as nothing quite fills us up as good as a little bit of luck and love. Perhaps, spend your Valentine’s in Germany this year, with a pig, at a casino?! Stranger things have happened!john

Let’s turn ourselves around, towards the direction of home, but passing the USA and going down south, straight for Brazil! In their native Portuguese language, the Brazilians celebrate Dia dos Namorados, which translates to, simply, Lovers’ Day in English. How much do you love to play in the lottery? We have all kinds of gaming fun over here at the Red Stag Ranch but if you wanted to try a little something different, grab your single friends (sorry fellas, but ladies only!) and participate in your very own “single lady lottery”, as we’ll call it. On June 12th, single ladies throughout Brazil will write down the name of one man they fancy, throw it into a hat, where they then draw names; of course, not knowing who they will choose. Whoever the single lady draws from the hat is supposed to be the man they mary, whether they chose him, or not. Of course, this is somewhat of a superstitious tradition, but all the same, it would be a good laugh for the girls!

Stepping back on that jet plane and once again, overseas, we’ll find ourselves in Thailand, where you may find yourself lucky in love, but it won’t come without a little hope and effort. The women of Thailand strongly believe that praying for a lover at the infamous Trimurti shrine will bring them the partner they’ve always longed for. Some say this practice is like a second nature for the many single ladies of Thailand. This is a weekly occasion, as every Thursday at 9pm, ladies gather at the shrine with red roses, incense and candles, as they kneel in front of the Hindu Gods and hope for love to come there way. This is surely a far reach from swiping “right” on Tinder, but hey, you never know until you try, right?!
